Miss Canada, 2003

Gorgeous Nazanin crowned world's princess
Dec 8, 2003

North Van's Miss Canada crowned World's princess UBC (University of British Columbia) graduate Nazanin Afshin-Jam takes first runner-up at Miss World By Stuart Hunter

With a global television audience of two billion people watching, a Canadian beauty was crowned yesterday. But all North Vancouver's Nazanin Afshin-Jam, 24, wanted after being named first runner-up in the Miss World competition in the southern Chinese resort city of Sanya was a Krispy Kreme doughnut, said her beaming older sister 'Naz'. "We're really proud of her," said Naz, 29, the elder of the two children of 'Jaleh' and 'Afshin Jam', who flew to China to watch their youngest, nicknamed "Nini," as she scored the highest-ever ranking for a Canadian woman in the Miss World contest. "She accomplished a lot in her life to warrant where she is today. This is one of the best experiences of her life." Miss Ireland, 19-year-old Rosanna Davison -- the daughter of Lady in Red songsmith Chris De Burgh -- won the Miss World crown. Afshin-Jam took second-place honours. China's Guan Qi was third in the field of 106 contestants. Afshin-Jam won the Miss World Canada crown in October in Toronto. Born in Iran, Afshin-Jam fled her homeland with her family after the fall of the shah. Although fiercely proud of her Canadian nationality, the Kitsilano Secondary grad who graduated from the University of B.C. with a double major in international relations and political science, also remains a role model for Persian women. "She's had thousands of e-mails from Persian women from around the world telling her how proud they are of her," Naz said. "They are proud that a Persian woman can speak with such a strong voice." Not only is the five foot seven inch, brown-eyed beauty a model and actor, but Afshin-Jam has pilot licences for powered aircraft and gliders. She also holds the highest rank possible in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and she speaks four languages -- English, French, Farsi and Spanish. She has training in singing, dance, public speaking and bush survival skills, and lists kayaking, sailing and go-kart racing as her favourite sports. She works with the Red Cross teaching kids about global issues such as poverty and child hunger. And, Naz adds with a laugh, her sister is single. Afshin-Jam is taking a year off from her broadcast journalism studies at the B.C. Institute of Technology to fulfil her role as Miss World Canada. In the future, she hopes to emulate one of her heroes, journalist Christiane Amanpour, as a foreign correspondent.

Afshin-Jam slated to return to B.C. today. And then there's the little matter of that doughnut. "She said she can't wait to have a Krispy Kreme," Naz said. "And she wants to meet Nelson Mandela." The Miss World pageant marked the first time China has hosted an international beauty contest. A $15.5-million tiara-shaped convention hall was built for the event, which China hopes will boost tourism in the palm-dotted resort city on the island province of Hainan. Contest judges included film star Jackie Chan and Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell. There were no disruptions at this year's event, unlike last year, when the contest had to be moved from Nigeria to London after deadly rioting between Muslims and Christians. MISS NINI Nickname: Nini Favourite junk food: Chocolate Lava Cake Favourite colour: Fuchsia Favourite smell: Vanilla Favourite soul food: "Too many choices" Favourite magazine: National Geographic Favourite music: Spanish-Arab fusion Favourite book: Mahatma Gandhi by Mahatma Gandhi Person You Would Most Like to Meet: Nelson Mandela

Deep Throat breaks cover

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4597503.stm

A former deputy chief, who was No. 2 at the FBI has reportedly admitted to being "Deep Throat", the source who leaked secrets during the Watergate scandal. The scandal forced the resignation of US President Richard Nixon in 1974.

Deep Throat helped Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncover the Watergate affair. The story is documented in the 1976 movie "All the President's Men", directed by Alan J. Pakula, staring Dustin Hoffman (as Carl Bernstein), and Robert Redford (as Bob Woodward).

The Washington Post confirmed this story on its Web site today. Bob Woodward, part of the journalistic team that broke the scandal, confirmed W. Mark Felt as "Deep Throat" -- ending a 30-year mystery.

Relay For Life, June 25-26

http://www.acsevents.org/faf/r.asp?t=4&i=94682&u=94682-81432965&e=305702915

Hello, my name is Sunoz Soroosh, but a lot of people call me Sunny. I am 18 years old and I will be attending UC Berkeley next year. I am a Persian and Arabic dancer with Niosha Dance Academy.

Once again this year, I am participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Tri-Cities on June 25-26, 2005 with Team Niosha Dance Academy. This is an overnight walkathon event, where each team tries to keep at least one member walking around the track for 24 hours. We also perform at this event, along with many other musicians and dancers. At the Relay for Life, there is a Luminaria ceremony, to honor loved ones lost to cancer, and a Survivor's lap to honor those who have won the battle against it. Each year, my fellow dancers and I participate in this event and raise money for cancer awareness and research, and since our dance teacher, Niosha Nafei, is a cancer survivor, this event is extremely important to us. But personally, I participate in this event in honor of my grandparents, Jamshid and Behbood Soroosh, because I lost them both to cancer. I am committed to raising money for the fight against cancer, and last year I raised 300 dollars, which was the most money out of anybody in my dance class.

This year, I have raised my goal to 400 dollars, and I hope that you can help me out by donating to this cause. You can donate online by going to my American Cancer Society webpage.

Any amount of money is appreciated, and will go to help win the fight against cancer. All donations are tax deductible and please do not hesitate to email me with any questions.

Thank you for your time,
Sunoz "Sunny" Soroosh

Appraisal fraud

http://money.cnn.com/2005/05/23/real_estate/financing/appraisalfraud/index.htm

Appraisal fraud: your home at risk

Appraisers say they're pressured to inflate their estimates of home values.

Anyone who's ever bought or refinanced a home knows the sense of relief when the appraisal comes in with high marks.

One overvalued appraisal can skew home prices throughout a neighborhood, according to the Appraisal Institute's Kelly. "If a house is appraised for 10 percent or 15 percent more than it's actually worth and the sale closes, it may be used by another appraiser as a comparable sale the very next day," he said. "It has a ripple effect."

US mulls ban on women in combat

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4560847.stm

Republicans in the US Congress are trying to pass legislation which would keep female soldiers out of combat.

Advocates of the proposal want to stop women from working as drivers, medics and logistics specialists in teams which provide back-up to combat units.

They say the women get too close to the fighting. But the US army is opposed to the plan at a time when they are having problems with recruitment.

Women who serve in the US army are barred by law from fighting on the front line.

About 9,000 women are serving in Iraq and 35 have been killed.

For the last three months, the army has failed to meet its recruiting targets. At the moment it looks set to miss its annual target by 15%.

Louisiana's frozen ark

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4547533.stm

The exotic world of the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species, New Orleans, reminds you of the film Jurassic Park in more ways than one.

The biggest carnivore they have cloned from DNA so far here at the centre is an African wildcat; the science is very real, and it works.

Dr Betsy Dresser is head of research, and she was keen to show us round her so-called "frozen zoo", a group of liquid nitrogen tanks containing cells from more than 1,000 different species which can be kept in a preserved state for hundreds of years.

Dr Dresser held up one of the straws containing cell tissue, and explained how the Noah's Ark of the future works: "Once we've dropped it to the temperature where we know the cryoprotectant is like a slush, we can drop it instantly into liquid nitrogen, and essentially metabolism in the cells just stops."

In theory, no species alive today should ever become extinct, as long as one of the dozen frozen zoos around the world has a cell sample. Among the species they have suspended in cell form are gorillas, Sumatran tigers and the mountain bongo antelope.

It's interesting to mention that Iran was not even on the list.

Robot builds copies of itself

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4538547.stm

US researchers have devised a simple robot that can make copies of itself from spare parts.

Each unit comes with a small computer code carrying a blueprint for the layout of the robot, electrical contacts to let it communicate with its neighbours, and magnets to let them stick together.

By turning and moving, the cubes can pick up new units, decide where they belong, and stack them alongside each other to make new devices.

In a little more than a minute, a simple three-cube robot can make a copy of itself.
That offspring version can then make further copies.

RED VIC MOVIE HOUSE

In 1980, a group of movie lovers decided to collectively run their own cinema. Hence, the Red Vic Movie House. For almost 10 years, Red Vic's first home was at the corner of Haight and Belvedere Streets. They introduced their now legendary couches to offer patrons a funky, yet comfy, place to watch their favorite films.

In 1991, the Red Vic moved to its present location, on Haight Street between Cole and Shraeder Streets. Unlike the orginal Red Vic location, the new Red Vic offers a larger auditorium equipped with video, 16mm and 35 mm dolby stereo sound projection.
